Driveway Assistance Device

Alerts motorists entering a one-lane work zone from a driveway as to the direction of mainline traffic. Reduces overall cycle lenghts while improving safety and efficiency.

Another Industry First From Horizon Signal

The Driveway Assistance Device (DAD) solves a longstanding work zone dilemma: How to control residential driveways that fall within a one-lane bidirectional workzone.

Since 2011, Horizon Signal has worked exclusively with various state Departments of Transportation to develop the DAD as an effective method for controlling driveway traffic. Each DAD is equipped with two flashing arrows to inform the motorists as to the direction traffic is flowing through the work zone. Drivers may enter the queue in the direction of the flashing arrow, thus reducing the likelihood of wrong-way driving within the lane closure.

As part of the signal system network, each DAD has full conflict monitoring capabilities. The DADs also have the capability to be activated and deactivated sequentially in order to maximize safety within the signal setup.

FEATURED CASE STUDY

DAD Systems deployed at 31 driveways following Hurricane Sandy.

How It Works

The Horizon SIgnal Driveway Assistance Device (DAD) is designed to address residential driveways that fall within a one-lane bi-directional work zone.  The DAD displays a flashing arrow in the direction traffic is flowing on the mainline.  Motorists exiting their driveway may join or follow the queue in the direction of the flashing arrow. A solid red indication is displayed when it is unsafe to enter the work zone.

Each DAD, as part of the signal system, is linked wirelessly to create a network. Flash indications end sequentially as traffic moves through the zone, helping to reduce the likelihood of drivers entering the work zone near the end of the cycle.

REDUCES LIKELIHOOD OF WRONG WAY DRIVING
LED arrow indications inform the motorist as to the direction of traffic flow.

CONTROL AN UNLIMITED NUMBER OF DRIVEWAYS
One DAD is placed at each residential driveway within the work zone, with the ability to control an unlimited number of driveways.

SEQUENTIAL FLASHING OPERATION
The ability to operate DADs sequentially enhances overall safety.

FORM FACTORS
The DAD is available in multiple platforms to meet specific project requirements

SAFETY
Each DAD has full conflict monitoring capabilities featuring Horizon's dual processor MMS.

MAXIMIZES WORK ZONE TRAFFIC FLOW
